New focus on the Sydney Cove
The Sydney Cove shipwreck collection has received plenty of attention recently. Author Georgina Haughton is working on a novel based on the Sydney Cove shipwreck story, and visited recently to investigate the items in the collection, and to interview Mike Nash from Tas Parks and Wildlife, who was the chief archaeologist on the excavation. She also interviewed Linda Clark, past object Conservator at QVMAG and current Conservator David Thurrowgood, and myself.
As part of the process of finding out about the collection, Georgina brought with her a cameraman, who filmed interviews, objects and displays, both for research purposes, and with the aim of creating a DVD to be included with the book to provide historical information to support the action in the novel.
The Sydney Cove collection has also been the recipient of additional funding from Parks and Wildlife with the aim of improving storage, cataloguing and conservation of the collection. Topping off this increased attention, the collection will also feature in an article in Australian Geographic magazine later in the year.
